4th International Conference on Selenium in the Environment and Human Health

(18-21 October 2015, Sao Paulo, Brazil)

 

 

Based on the overwhelming success at the first three International Conferences on Selenium in the Environment and Human Health held in 2009 (Suzhou, China), 2011 (Suzhou, China), and 2013 (Hefei, China), the 4th International Conference on Selenium in the Environment and Human Health will take place on 18-21 October 2015 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This conference will again create an interdisciplinary atmosphere that connects research representing the multi-nature of selenium (Se) throughout the world. It is our continued intent to increase and expand our multi-faceted perspective on Se and evaluate its impact on environments and biological systems via an international and interdisciplinary vision.

Conference Program

Abstracts are welcomed for all aspects of Se research relevant to environment, animal and human health, and biochemical, nutritional and molecular processes. The conference program will include, but not limited to, nutrition, diet, human and animal health, disease, toxicity, environmental ecotoxicity, biochemistry, molecular biology, chemical analysis, speciation techniques, and modeling. Internationally-renown Se research experts will be invited to present their research findings on the following topics:

  • Soil Se variation and worldwide deficiency and contamination distribution;
  • Transport and fate of Se in the air-water-soil/sediment-plant and animal systems;
  • Phytomemediation & phytomanagement of Se-contaminated soils;
  • Understanding the role of Se in the physical and biological environment;
  • Biochemical, cellular, and physiological functions of Se in animal and human health;

Post-Conference Field Trip to Fazenda Aruanã Brazil Nut Farm in Manaus, Amazonas

(Updated on September 3, 2015)

The Brazil nut tree is native to Brazil, especially scattered in large tropical rainforests on the banks of the Amazon River. In Manaus of Amazonas State, Fazenda Aruanã (a Brazil nut farm) has over 320,000 Brazil nut trees on a 3,400 hectare land, along with many others in nearby tropical rainforests. The local conference organizers will coordinate a post-conference field trip to the Fazenda Aruanã Brazil Nut Farm in Manaus, Amazonas. The Brazil nut farm is about 3-hours by bus from downtown Manaus. Thus, this group visit will be a whole day event (approximately 8 hours).

The group will leave the conference hotel for Sao Paulo airport (GRU) around 4:00pm on the 21st (Wednesday). We recommend you to take the flight Gol Linhas Aereas G3-1652 from Sao Paulo (GRU, departing at 8:50pm) to Manaus (MAO, arriving at 10:38pm). The airfare from Sao Paulo to Manaus (one way) is approximately $150. If you need to return back to Sao Paulo after this field trip, the group will fly G3-1653 from Manaus (MAO) to Sao Paulo (GRU) on the 24th (Saturday). The departure time from MAO is 11:10am and the arrival time at GRU is 4:10pm. The airfare of this roundtrip is about $376.

The hotel in Manaus is Saint Paul Hotel (www.hotelsaintpaul.tur.br), located at a historic area in downtown Manaus. The hotel rate is $51 per night. The transportation cost from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the Brazil nut farm ($49).

Please be advised that you will need to purchase your air tickets and make your hotel reservations through a travel website or your travel agency. On October 23 (Friday), prior to your departure from Manaus, we recommend you to participate in a Manaus City tour in the morning (four hours, $26/person), and/or a Jungle tour in the afternoon (from 3:00 pm to 7:30 pm, $40/person). The jungle tour will include navigating Solimoes River and catching Piranhas fish and alligators. These tours will be organized through a local tour company.

Individual participant is responsible for all his/her expenses associated with this event. If you are planning to have a round trip flight, three nights hotel, and participate in the field trip and two tour events, the total cost can be estimated to be $642. We strongly suggest you purchase your air ticket and make your hotel reservation at your earliest convenience. Please also update Dr. Andre Reis with your travel planning.

4th International Zinc Symposium

Prior to the 4th International Conference on Selenium in the Environment and Human Health, 4th International Zinc Symposium: Improving Crop Production and Human Health will be held on 15-17 October 2015 at Bourbon Convention Ibirapuera (the same convention center) in São Paulo, Brazil. The selenium conference attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the Zinc Symposium at a reduced registration rate.
